Sinclair Lewis: A Descriptive Bibliography

Authors: Stephen R. Pastore and James M. Hutchisson
Average review score:

Honest and concise
This book provides the most honest and concise bibliography of one of the foremost authors of our time and Mr. Pastore has essentially re-engineered how a bibliography should be written - that "thin" can be better than "fat".

The best research bibliography on the market.
This book will serve as a high water mark for all bibliographies to follow. The numerous illustrations, the obvious painstaking care with which the material was assembled and, above all, the accessability of the material to all researchers, professional and novice, make this a necessity for any library.

The Best 20th Century Bibliography
As a Professor of Literature at the graduate level, I am acutely aware of the need for quality literary analyses of this type. Wish I could have written it myself. A really good book.

Trusting You Are Loved - Practices for Partnership

Average review score:

It's a keeper!
I think I have read more self help books than Bridget Jones, well at least we are on par.
This book is great. I've read it several times and wouldn't think of getting rid of it.

The book talks about the destructive circle of relationships, when I find myself caught up in that, I take out this book. Each time its helped me come back to reality and a more peaceful frame of mind.

This book was a rare gift for me...
In Trusting You are Loved, I received a rare gift. I felt fully acknowledged and validated for the tremendous amount of relationship work I have already done on behalf of experiencing love in my relationships AND it opened up a whole new horizon of possibility for me to continue to grow, and continuing to grow I am! I am very thankful!

Awesome Book!
I have read this book over and over again, sometimes in its entirety, sometimes in bits and pieces. My partner and I were fortunate enough to take the 2.5 day class called "Trusting you are Loved" in Dallas and it was a relationship saver! Imagine relationships without fear, distrust, anxiety and anger. This book makes it possible! I also learned that it isnt so much the relationship I have with him, but the one I have with myself that makes the biggest difference!

Eat Dangerously
Published in Paperback by Hollander and Hechsher (04 April, 1999)
Authors: Benjamin Lewis, Rodrigo Paranhos Velloso, and Stacy Schulist
Average review score:

A Cover-to-Cover Read!
This is the first cookbook that I have sat down and read cover-to-cover. The authors have a great sense of humor as well as excellent taste in food! The recipes are easy to follow, delicious, and sensuously sinful!

Finally, people who know how to eat.
I don't know about you, but I am so sick of going to restaurants and having my dinner companions say things like: "sauce on the side, please" or "can this be made vegetarian?" or "no oil, no butter" or "I know it's not on the menu, but would you mind just plopping down a dry old chicken breast on half a lettuce leaf?" It's embarassing. I eat at least a stick of butter a day, not to mention all the foie gras, creme brulee, lamb and creamy sauces I pile in, and I'M THIN! And I have LOW BLOOD PRESSURE! Because of EXERCISE! So if you are like me, this book is for you. The authors have a ribald sense of humor, and in spite of the typeface this is a fun book to read. Surprisingly, the recipies are really, really good. Quails with Morels, Penne with Salmon, and the Roast Duck with Black Currant Sauce are all trust-worthy concoctions. The coq-au-vin, seemingly condensed from Julia Child's three-pager works well too. So, if you sit around a lot, watch TV, or just don't move much, don't use this book. You'll probably die.

Freed from the repression of PC cookery
Tired of being bullied by the passive-aggressive sniffs and lifted eyebrows of the low-fat crowd? Arm yourself with this book! Don't be intimidated by those sanctimonious health-mongers! It is better to have real creme once a month than to have skimmed milk every day. The recipes are decadent, expensive and worth it. Eat well and prosper.

The Heretic

Author: Lewis Weinstein

Bravissimo!
The blend of history, the development of his characters, and the attention to details. The Heretic, remind's me Umberto Eco " The name of the Rose". BRAVISSIMO! Mr. Weinstein

15th century Spain comes alive!
The Heretic is well written, entertaining and historically reminds us of a dark period in the history of Spain. The characters were real to me and I found that I was compelled to keep reading and finished the 370 pages in about 2 and a half days. I thoroughly enjoyed it and wished the story could have continued.

My Opinion
Just finished Lew Weinstein's book - The Heretic. I was very touched by the characters - they truly came alive. It held my attention throughout the book. It also filled me with a greater understanding of Judaism and enlightened me as to the dominance of Catholicism over Judaism during this period. It was well written and the research for this book left nothing to be desired. Congratulations to Lewis Weinstein on The Heretic.

The Best Yet for Children
I teach 4th grade. This is the best book I have ever used in my classroom. Both boys and girls love the poems. I read from it almost every day. Both the children and I enjoy the book. What I find especially unique is the number of poems which my class enjoys. Of 31 children there are 17 different favorite poems. I have read many of the poems several times and the response is still laughter. L. W. Lewis has done an amazing job. I have recommended the book to other teachers and purchased copies for my children and my sister's children. It is a great book and I strongly recommend it to anyone who has children (or grandchildren) in grades K-6.

This book is a fun book for kids to read
I really like this book.It is fun to read, and my friends like it to. My favorite poem is the one about "Barbee".

My niece is 10 years old and in a special education class because of a dyslexic learning diability. I had worked with her all summer trying to spark an interest in reading. When we discovered the book, "Why Do Flys eat doggy poop?", she fell in love. Reciting the poems and enjoying their comical content has really sparked an interest in her to read. The poems are easy to read and because she can read them I have seen a boost in her self esteem. She has demanded that I put up a shelf in her room just to display her special book.
Thanks Mr. Lewis

why do flys eat doggy poop?
I recently recieved this charming book as a gift from a special friend for my children. Our usual evening ritual is for my husband to (very begrudgingly) read to our children before bed. My son wanted to here some of the poems in this book. After the first one, through snickers and belly laughs, they read together for almost an entire hour. At my promting is was time for bed with the promise to read the rest tomorrow. I whole- heartedly enjoyed watching and listening to a very well put together assortment of childrens poems. My son (almost 6)thought they were hilarious. My husband thought they were hysterical and my two year old just laughed because everyone else was. Overall I really enjoyed that first night with our new favorite book and have since recommended it to all of my friends with chidren. THANK YOU- AGAIN!!! Mr. Lewis @214

It seemed so real and I couldnt put it down. I read it three times just to make sure I didnt miss anything. This is more than just a love story its what every woman wants deep down inside. Mr. Lewis you definately have connected.

Passion, Eroticism, Action, and Love...This book has it ALL!
Forbidden Desires is the kind of book you tell your friends that they have to buy their OWN copy. Mine is not for sale!! This book had me so erotically excited one minute, crying the next minute, fussing the next minute, and smiling the next minute, It was incredible!!. It takes you on a magical ride. The life and times of the main character Micheal Goody and the 2 women (Carmen and Renee)who drive this man into an inescapable roller coaster ride of lust, pain and desire with some love sprinkled in here and there!. This is a story for men and women alike. If you are like me and workout and read at the same time, then you will have the best workout of your life!!! I could not put it down. I have read it for the 5th time now and always see something I missed. The main character is a man with issues and conflicts and there is no way you can predict the end! It was the most exciting, uplifting and passionate story that I have ever had the pleasure of reading! That Christopher J. Lewis has got to be congratulated for such a splendidly extraordinary book. I cannot wait for another book from this author to come out! If you ask me this book should be required reading for anyone who loves action, sensuality, lust, love and real life story! Forbidden desires is the perfect gift for the person who is hard to buy for, and for that matter anyone who you consider a friend. My copy is definitely NOT for sale...You neet GET YOUR OWN!!! LOL

This story is like a love spell. It lures you in immediately and doesn't let you go. I have read many books that start off good and fade off, but Forbidden Desires keeps you, girlfried does it keep you! The characters are so realistic, Oh my, what I wouldnt do for a little Michael Goody myself. If you want to settle into a good moment ladies, and you know what I mean...read this book! I laughed, cried, got upset, and (fell in love), just kidding about falling in love, but Mike would be a nice catch. Mr. Lewis is very talented. I felt his, well let's just say I enjoyed the fantasy!!!

Traitor
Published in Audio Cassette by Blackstone Audiobooks (October, 2000)
Authors: Ralph Peters, Edward Lewis, and David Hilder
Average review score:

Great story - very realistic
The portrayal of our defense industry in this story is unfortunately accurate. We have placed so much emphasis on "smart weapons", that we have forgotten the real effectiveness of our military. The action and pace of this book will keep the reader enthralled and they will not want to put it down.

best Peters in years
I've read almost all of Ralph Peters' novels, and this is probably my favorite to date. I passed it over in hardcover--frankly it didn't sound very interesting. I couldn't have been more wrong: it's one of the best written, engrossing novels I've read in a long time. Peters is one of the few military thriller writers that can name drop Thomas Hardy novels and actually make us believe his characters read them. I know what a cliche this sounds, but I couldn' t put it down. Peters has within him his best novel yet--some day he'll write the Once An Eagle of his generation of officers.

Contractors Can Really Be Traitors
After 25 years in the defense industry, watching the Services buy big things they don't need while neglecting small things they do (like enough pay so the troops don't have to be on food stamps), it continues to disturb me that the American taxpayer continues to allow Congress to sell out to what Ike Eisenhower called the "military-industrial complex". TRAITOR could have been a documentary. This is a great novel, thrilling and unpredictable, but it is also based on the real world and all the more gripping because of this.

C.S. Lewis Letters to Children
Published in Paperback by MacMillan Publishing Company (July, 1988)
Author: C. S. Lewis
Average review score:

A bit lacking
This is one book I had wanted to read for along time. It just seemed like an excellent idea to be able to experience an author in this extraordinary way, communicating with his number one fans: kids.

Sadly, when I read it, I didn't like it that much. First of all, it was a very short read. I finished reading it in one afternoon. Secondly, I found the book to be lacking information, because letters are presented here and there, but most of the time we don't get to read a "two-way" conversation, so it is hard to follow. Also, I expected to read letters to and from many children, and was a bit disappointed when I realised only a few children's letters were featured.

Still, I love C.S. Lewis, and was very happy to read his Letters to Children, and feel as if some had been written for me.

Letters from a Gracious Man
Every time I read another book by C.S. Lewis I become more grateful for his life and his writings. This book is a gem, and a wonderful window into Lewis' soul. He answers these children's letters with self-effacing grace and humor, and with a sincere respect for their opinions and their dignity. While being a great writer has no particular connection with being a good person, this book is, to me, irresistable evidence of Lewis' personal goodness. The Angler (as he once referred to God in "Surprised by Joy") snared a fine specimen when he snared the soul of C.S. Lewis.

"yours ever... C.S. Lewis"
It is said that as regularly as the mail arrived, professor Lewis sat down at his desk and personally responded... even if the correspondents were little children who had come to know of him through his Narnia books. In fact, he felt it was his God-given duty to do so! "C.S. Lewis: Letters to Children" is a collection of these heartfelt responses, spanning nearly 20 years (1944-1963).

Lewis's own direct contact with children was limited. He once said, "I theoretically hold that one ought to like children, but am shy with them in practice." (Letter to Arthur Greeves, Dec.'35). And in his "The Abolition of Man" he says (chap.1, para.11) "I myself do not enjoy the society of small children... I recognize this as a defect in myself." What he may have lacked in direct contact with children he certainly seems to have displaced with these personal letters, in which we see a lofty Oxford academic who is able to freely converse with children about such diverse topics as (of all things) Zoroastrianism, cats, the Gauls, Virgilian hexameter, the Renaissance, and his opinion that human faces are much easier to draw than animal faces. Never does he talk DOWN to his younger "friends". He usually signs off with an affectionate "yours ever"! And often he sprinkles a question or two of his own in a letter, which, rather than dismissing the sender, invites a response, showing he values these children. For example, an American girl (Joan) received 28 letters from Lewis over a 20 year period!

Why do I give this book a rating of 5 stars? Is the writing as deep, weighty, and significant as War & Peace? Not even remotely. But, to me, it is remarkable that an academician/author of the caliber of C.S. Lewis found the time to write such beautiful simple letters to inquiring kids all over the world. There's something very refreshing (for Lewis fans like me at least) about picking this book up and just turning at random to any letter. One ends with "It is still cold here but the snowdrops, crocuses, primroses and daffodils are up and the thrushes are building nests." Or another "Well, I can't say I have had a happy Easter, for I have lately got married and my wife is very, very ill." Such disclosure is an example of the respect Lewis felt children worthy of. One word of caution though: Does a proper appreciation of this book require a familiarity with Lewis's works? Quite frankly: Yes! The Narnia books! Because so many of the letters are alluding to Narnia, readers unfamiliar with that cycle of books may find most of this book quite boring.

Lewis never tired of corresponding with his child fans. His final letter, to a boy named Philip was written on November 21, 1963. The following day Lewis passed away peacefully at his Oxford home. Earlier, he had written the following to a group of fifth graders:

"I'm tall, fat, rather bald, red-faced, double-chinned, black-haired, have a deep voice, and wear glasses for reading.

The only way for us to get to Aslan's country is through death, as far as I know: perhaps some very good people get just a tiny glimpse before then.
Best love to you all. When you say your prayers sometimes ask God to bless me,

Yours ever, C.S. Lewis"
